Legal Shit

Unless otherwise stated, all material on this site is "commie-righted", which means that it can be freely copied, distributed, broadcast or whatever, providing no profits are made or sought from it and that the author is given due credit (or blame). If you want that in slightly neater terms, then check this Creative Commons License.

If anyone wants to sample any of the music, just let me know what you need and I'll be happy to help. So long as the sample is used in a creative, original way (ie, you haven't just added a shit disco beat) I'll probably be happy to forget about royalties. I would appreciate it however if a copy of the result was sent my way...

Same goes if you'd like to remix any of my tracks.

Unlike some musicians, I'm not concerned about people downloading my music for free. If I were, I wouldn't have hundreds of songs available for free download. I think it's nonsense to say that kids downloading MP3s off Limewire or some other P2P network hurts the artist in any significant way. In reality, the "losses" are almost entirely imaginary, because they rest on the assumption that all the people doing the downloading have the money, the means and the will to buy the songs, and would if only they weren't available for free. Obviously, that is absurd. The only sense in which the loss is arguably real (or at least possible) is when someone does have both the means and the will to pay but chooses not to. I say that it is only "arguable" because the lost income is potential rather than actual, and as MP3's cost nothing to make, copy and distribute, there is no actual loss involved. That is the key difference between downloading music from P2P networks and shoplifting CDs: the loss is not of property but of control over distribution.

It is true enough that this loss of control can hurt the artist - but only when those copying and distributing the music without permission are also selling it. That is piracy. Because the pirates didn't actually pay to produce any of the music, they have far smaller outlays to recoup, which allows them to undercut the artist. I'm certainly not going to argue in favour of that. Profiting from another's labour is one of the intrinsic injustices of capitalism. But when there is no money involved, that's not piracy and the "losses" involved are nebulous to say the least.

Of course, not all of my music is available for free - some of it, I'm trying to sell. Does that change my position? Not really, no. As I see it, it's a simple question of ethics. My view is: From each according to their ability; to each according to their needs. If you value my music, but for whatever reason, can't pay for it, then by all means, download it for free. If you value it and can pay for it, then please do. Your support is much appreciated. The fact is, I have more to gain by offering free downloads than I have to lose by people not paying. I have no desire to resemble the old landed gentry, making beautiful country parks but then limiting access to them for the privileged few. Fuck exclusivity. Basically, whether you pay or not is a matter for your own conscience. If you haven't got one, then you're probably not the audience I'm aiming for anyway.

As both an anarchist and a skint doley, it's unlikely that I'd sue anyone who breached the commie-right, but be warned:

ANY CAPITALIST PIGFUCKER WHO TRIES TO RIP ME OFF WILL BE STRUNG UP WITH NIPPLE-HOOKS WHEN THE REVOLUTION COMES.
