This is another album that had quite a long incubation period - about 3 years. The spark that eventually brought it to life was a phrase I read in a pamphlet by the Levellers called "An Agreement of the People". Towards the end is a passage which starts

"And though the malice of our enemies and such as they delude would blast us by scandals, aspersing us with designs of anarchy and community..."
The title jumped out at me, though obviously my understanding of it was a complete inversion of what the author originally meant. Or rather, I'd proudly accept the charges. J'suis anarchiste.

With the title in mind I started making notes of ideas for tracks, but it was still several months before I wrote a track - "Red & Black" - which felt like the springboard. From there it went fairly steadily without too many dead ends. A couple of older tracks got roped in because they just seemed to fit. "Solidarity" was one track I was desperate to use but had long had trouble writing lyrics for it. When I did eventually write some, I found the track was just a touch too fast for me to do the vocals comfortably so I ended up doing a slower remix and used that instead.

Only other significant point about the production is that in the middle of recording I finally got my hands on an acoustic guitar and it makes a couple of appearances on the album. Oh, and the birdsong on "Grassroots" was captured by sticking my crappy mic out of the window one morning when the wee feathery bastards were being particularly noisy.

All tracks written, recorded, mixed, produced by Neil O'Brien. Art work by Neil O'Brien.
